Riverfest in the ‘Root: Bitter Root Water Forum hosts annual event

Hamilton will celebrate the Bitterroot River this weekend with its sixth annual Riverfest in the ‘Root, a free event that organizers say is both fun and informative.

Attendees to Saturday’s event – which have numbered from 300 to 500 in previous years – can fine-tune their fly fishing at a clinic, take in a dance routine from Hamilton’s Groovz Dance Studio, see some exotic and local animals from Animal Wonders, Inc., and cap it all off with a dance to the music of Missoula’s Big Sky Mudflaps in the evening.

It all starts this evening, Friday, Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. with the Run for the River 5k, a race that winds its way through two city parks along the river starting at Kiwanis River Park.

For a $27 registration fee, participants help support host organization Bitter Root Water Forum and receive a Sport-Tek T-shirt.

“We are a local nonprofit that works for clean water,” said Katie Vennie, the program assistant with the forum. “We work with kids from school to get them out of the classroom ... And we work on-the-ground projects to improve water quality in the Bitterroot.”
